perennial cultivated as an annual
The sensitive plant or mimosa pudica is an extraordinary perennial plant native to South America, very surprising since it closes at the slightest danger which allows it to protect itself from excessive rainfall or predation. It returns to its normal state after 10 minutes. The flowers are small ruffled pink balls. Successfully sowing sensitive plants or mimosa pudica Soak the seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Sow on fine seed compost without pushing the seeds in too much and place in a veranda, very bright room, balcony in summer. This variety will need light, heat (25°C) and humidity to germinate. Lightly cover the seeds with compost and keep moist. Germination in 20/25 days. Transplant into a pot, then plant in a suitable pot, with good drainage in a mixture of 1/3 heather soil + 1/3 peat + 1/3 classic compost. Culture Indoor cultivation is recommended. The sensitive plant will need soil that is always moist but not soggy in spring and summer. In winter, water sparingly. When the plant is thirsty, its leaves turn yellow and fall. Flowering Flowering appears from June to October. Tiphaine's opinion : "This delicate plant is very easy to sow in a pot, simply in seed compost. It developed quickly, and produced pretty flowers in the summer. Children love to stroke the leaves which fold up when touched!"
