Squash & Zucchini

A squash refers to the fruit of many cultivars of Cucurbitaceae species. There are three groups: pumpkins and giraumons with large fruits, from the species Cucurbita maxima ; butternut squash ( Cucurbita moschata ) with smooth, elongated, little-loved fruits; pumpkins and zucchinis ( Cucurbita pepo ) with fruits of very variable shape and color. Gourd cultivars are also called "squash", while small decorative squashes are called "colocynths".
