The Korean barberry is a thorny shrub reaching between 2 and 3 meters in height with a span of about 2 meters. This bush has a tendency to produce suckers, which allows it to spread. Its abundant and ornamental flowering takes place from April to May, with numerous clusters of yellow and rather melliferous flowers. These flowers give rise to a multitude of small oval fruits, red when ripe towards the end of September. Birds particularly appreciate these fruits rich in vitamins, which feed them throughout the winter.
The foliage, a soft green in summer, turns a red-orange hue in the fall before falling. Although the fruits are very acidic and difficult to eat raw or dried, they can be used to enhance sweet or savory dishes, or made into jam or juice.
Berberis are not very demanding in terms of soil, being able to adapt to both acidic and calcareous soils, provided that they are well drained. They tolerate both hot and dry Mediterranean climates, as well as harsh winters with temperatures that can drop to -18 °C. Thanks to its ornamental qualities, Berberis koreana is an excellent option for hedgerows, but it can also be planted as an isolated plant or in a clump.
