200 ANCHOR - OYSTER MUSHROOM AB
Discover growing oyster mushrooms in your garden using pegs seeded with oyster mushroom mycelium. Fun and easy to set up, this growing technique will allow you to recycle your stumps or logs. The oyster-shaped oyster mushroom has thick, white flesh with a mild flavor. My pegs are not covered with mycelium, what should I do? If you do not see any mycelium when you receive your pegs, be patient, it will develop. Store your bag without opening it or moving the pegs, at room temperature in the light but not direct light. Storing the pegs before use It is possible to store the pegs in the refrigerator for a month, the bag unopened. Step 1: when should you introduce the pegs? Autumn, winter and early spring (from November to the end of March) are the best periods for inoculation so that the mycelium can develop sufficiently to produce a harvest in the fall. The pegs will adapt well to cold and frost. Step 2: which stumps should you use to insert the pegs? You can use freshly cut poplar or beech stumps (3 months maximum) with a length of 80cm to 120cm. The larger the diameter of the log, the longer the culture will take since the mycelium will take longer to degrade the log. Recommended wood species: Poplar, elm, birch and alder. Step 3: how to make the holes and insert the pegs? Make 9 mm Ø holes using a staggered drill then gently push in the mycelium pegs with a hammer. There should be no space between the peg and the wood. You can fill the holes with beeswax. Humidity is a key element for the proper development of mushrooms on logs, water your stumps after inserting the pegs. The logs must be stored away from the wind and sun and always remain moist for 3 months. You can cover the wood with tarpaulin for more shade. Step 4: the development of mushrooms Bury the logs of wood 2/3 sheltered from the sun and wind After 7 to 8 months the logs should be colonized by the whitish mycelium. It quickly becomes cottony then thick and tenacious. Make sure that your logs are constantly moist (but not flooded), when the buds appear, do not water the logs any more otherwise the oyster mushrooms will not develop. Oyster mushrooms generally appear after a drop in temperatures in early autumn when night temperatures fall below 8 ° C. They appear in clusters. Harvest all the oyster mushrooms without leaving any stems on the log of wood. There will normally be several harvests until the end of the year. The mycelium will then enter a resting period until next autumn, so the harvest will generally last 2 years for poplar and 3 years for beech. You can definitely use the stumps for firewood once the cultivation is finished. How to cook oyster mushrooms? We recommend eating young oyster mushrooms so that they keep their tenderness, grilled in the oven or on the barbecue, marinated or simply fried in olive oil with garlic.
