How to successfully sow basil
Basil requires a minimum constant temperature of 20°C to germinate. It is therefore recommended to sow your seeds in a hotbed or heated greenhouse . Start your seeds in early spring in pots . Choose a good, fine seed compost to ensure successful germination.
- Do not press the seeds in : pack the potting soil into the cups or tray , then lightly brush the surface with your fingers. Place the seeds, then sprinkle a little soil on top if necessary before packing down firmly.
- Watering : Use a spray bottle to lightly moisten the soil until the seeds germinate. Be careful not to overwater, as excessive moisture could harm your seedlings.
- The sprouting takes 6 to 8 days on average. Place your terrine or greenhouse near a bright window .
Planting basil in the garden
Plant your basil plants after the last frost in May , when the young plants have reached 3-4 leaves . If you are north of the Loire , wait until June to avoid any risk of frost.
- Soil : Choose well-drained , rich soil with a sunny exposure . You can enrich the soil with a little manure to promote growth.
- Spacing : Keep 50 cm between each plant to allow good air circulation and optimal development.
- Watering : Water without wetting the foliage and without excess to avoid mold and disease.
Harvesting basil
Harvesting basil leaves can be done about 2 months after sowing .
Leaves harvested in May and June , just before flowering, are the most fragrant. However, you can harvest leaves year-round as long as your basil plant has leaves.
The more leaves you harvest, the more your plant will grow and produce new leaves.
To preserve your basil :
Chop the leaves and place them in ice cube trays filled with water.
You can also preserve basil in olive oil for longer storage.
Additional tips
Plant between tomato plants : Basil protects tomatoes against certain pests.
Grow in pots or planters : All types of basil grow perfectly in pots or planters on a window or balcony .
