The Blackcurrant of Burgundy is an old mid-season variety, vigorous and self-sterile. It is traditionally grown in Burgundy, where it is used to make the famous Crèmes de Cassis de Dijon. To ensure good fruiting, it requires the presence of a late-flowering pollinating variety, such as Andega, Géant de Boskoop or Royal de Naples. The Noir de Bourgogne grape clusters are short, with small but richly aromatic fruits. Although the berries are acidic, they have an exceptional aromatic intensity, making them an ingredient of choice for the production of liqueurs. Suitable for various types of soil, provided there is no excess water. It prefers exposure to the sun or partial shade, especially in very hot regions, and it absolutely needs a cold winter to ensure abundant flowering and fruiting. Hardy and not very demanding in water, a simple mulch at its base is generally enough to make it self-sufficient in most regions. The leaves can be consumed as a herbal tea for their digestive properties. And the fruits, rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and pectin, are perfect for preparing jams, juices and liqueurs.
