CABBAGE BROCCOLI FIOLARO OR WILD BROCCOLI AB
Brassica oleracea var. italica
Somewhere between broccoli and kale, this heirloom variety, native to Creazzo in northern Italy, produces leaves strongly reminiscent of dandelions. The tender stems are delicious raw or cooked. Its flavor is rather sweet and spicy, reminiscent of cabbage.
Its name "fiolaro" comes from "fioi", which means children (young shoots) on the stem, the part that is eaten.
Sowing
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in July in a nursery, or 1 cm deep outdoors.
Do not compact the soil to allow the plants to reach the light more easily.
To germinate, kale seeds require temperatures between 7°C and 20°C for about 10 days.
Planting broccoli fiolaro cabbage
Transplant in place when the plants have 4 leaves, at a distance of 80 cm in all directions, in fertile, deep, fresh and humus-rich soil, in a sunny location.
Mulch and water at the base.
Protect with a winter fleece if severe frost is forecast.
It likes rich, clayey soils, but can adapt to most lands, as long as there is freshness.
Harvest
Broccoli fiolaro cabbage leaves are harvested from September to November.
