CUCUMBER THE GENEROUS AB
Cucumis sativus
The Généreux Cucumber is an old variety, mid-season , hardy and productive . It produces cylindrical, half-long fruits, about twenty centimeters long, with smooth, medium green skin and light green spots .
Its fruits, picked young, can be used as pickles . Their flavor has a hint of bitterness .
It is recommended for growing under cold shelter or in open fields .
Sowing
Sow in March/April/May in pots , then transplant into healthy, fresh, loose, humus-rich soil when the plant has 3 leaves and frost is no longer a risk. Space 0.60m apart, in rows 1.30m apart, in a sunny, warm location . Water regularly.
Trick
Most cucumber varieties are called "runners" , that is to say they produce long stems and can easily occupy 2-3 m² ! Not very practical for small vegetable gardens! But it is possible to get around the problem by encouraging your cucumber plants to grow upwards, by climbing on a fence for example. Help your plants to position themselves on their support, the tendrils of your cucumbers will do the rest. This practical and simple method gives the fruits better exposure to light, prevents them from being soiled and makes their harvest much easier... and it also works for gherkins !
