BLACK ELDERBERRY DONAU AB - PLANT
SAMBUCUS nigra
The Donau Elderberry is an erect and moderately vigorous plant that is distinguished by its slightly scented flowering in early May. Its fruits, ripe at the end of August, are particularly appreciated for their intense black color. This elderberry is characterized by compact clusters and large berries, while having a more moderate juice coloring than other varieties. This plant is known for its high productivity of black berries, which makes it a popular choice for flower and fruit production.
For its cultivation, it prefers a fresh soil, rich in organic matter, and adapts well to different types of soils and exposures. When planting, it is recommended to add compost and ensure regular watering during the first years to guarantee good development.
It is mainly used in cooking: its flowers are used in the composition of syrups, wines, sorbets, and lemonades, while the fruits, often cooked, are used in the preparation of juices, jellies, and jams. However, it is important to note that the rest of the plant, including the leaves, branches and roots, is toxic. The leaves can nevertheless be used in the garden, in the form of manure, to speed up composting.
